MamaPower: Establishing a Healthy Community Update – October 2024

We would like to introduce you to Rebecca Kirway, the new Community Health Educator, who began working with the community in early September.  She began her work by  meeting  women in the community and young girls at Nashipay School. Ms. Kirway, who is fluent in Maa, has 30 years of professional experience working in Maasai communities. These experiences have given her the skills and ways of knowing to interact with the Mamas in what she describes as a very comfortable and natural way. “I have observed many similarities between this community and other Maasai communities I’ve worked with, such as in Monduli and Simanjiro. These familiar conditions and attitudes make it easier for me to share my experiences and insight here.”

She has shared that she is truly impressed with the work of the Tanzania Health Team, “I loved hearing them explain the progress they’ve made, especially in using sanitary pads provided during previous project implementations.  We’ve been discussing future plans with the women, the Traditional Birth Attendants and the Makuyuni Maasai Health Team. Part of our ongoing efforts will include the continued distribution of menstrual kits and education which have significantly impacted the lives of women here.”
