San Antonio’s New School sits on the hillside waiting for the children

The New School was only open for a few months and then shut down because of COVID.  However, the teachers have been working on-line with some of the children and encouraging them to go to La Casita for extra help. And, a group of volunteers have been able to build new bookcases from old timber from the provisional school.

Currently, the principal, Alma, is working with the mayor to ensure the building is completed and functioning well before school opens again.  There are several infrastructure issues with the new school building that need repair or upgrading.  Earlier in the year, a plumbing issue was discovered that limited the water supply to 30 minutes. With our help, a more efficient system has been installed with a proper water pump and large cistern. Now the children will have access to clean water for drinking and washing their hands – a much better educational environment.

As well, the electrical system is inadequate to meet the every-day demand so Alma is trying to persuade the mayor to correct the situation before the children are able to return. Meanwhile, our volunteer “Techie,” Eduardo, is working on the computer lab to get it up and running. Hopefully, the children will be able to return to their new school soon – healthy and happy!
