The COVID crisis in Nepal continues so we are continuing to help on a one on one basis. The Nepal team is pleased to announce the building of the chicken coop for Bina is complete! As mentioned in an earlier post, Bina and her two children, continue to try to manage with the recent lost of her husband due of COVID. Bina is from the Dalit caste (Untouchable), meaning "broken/scattered" in Sanskrit and Hindi, a term used for people belonging to castes in Nepal who have been subjected to untouchability. Although Nepal is working to abolish the caste system, this is a deep cultural belief and the stigma of this creates many barriers for Bina, one of which is finding employment. The stress and worry about how she will support her children has twice caused her to attempt suicide. ICO is continuing with mental health support and food for her and her children. With the chicken coop she will be able to work towards independence. The chickens have been ordered, and when they mature, Bina will receive income from both selling the eggs as well as the chickens. The goal for this project is to help Bina and her family to feel proud, independent and self sufficient. Thank you again to donors, without whose generous donations we could not have made this a reality.
