In February 2020 we completed our 7th permaculture project!
The place? St. Clare’s Primary School in Elburgon, Nakuru County. Right in front of the preschool the impacted grass got chopped up and removed. It was back-breaking work.
Little school children, secondary students, and teachers all pitched in. Joash Barasa, (our East Africa Permaculture Project Manager), designed the site. He brought in 2 other permaculture experts to assist him.
In total 40 workers, and 210 students of all ages pitched in, worked hard and made this happen!
It took 3 weeks to complete the project. Vegetables got planted. Fruit tree seedlings got implanted along the road sweeping in. The Team dug swales to direct the water.
A total of 553 fruit trees were planted! These included: 80 papaya trees, 30 mangoes, 70 avocado, 70 mango, 50 lemon trees, 50 orange trees, 50 apple trees, 3 kiwi plants, 60 passion fruit, 3 macadamia trees, 120 tree tomatoes, and 20 guava plants.
Fencing was installed to keep livestock from eating the vegetables.
Seeing the children from aged 5 to 18 participate with the elders was a delight to see. This is how the next generation gets transformed.
When the project completed, the community had a celebration. Small gifts were handed out. Cameras were flashing and recording. Everyone spoke with deep gratitude for what got accomplished…
..and, for what will come – fresh, plentiful, organic vegetables to feed the children.
