La Cruz Women's Project
The opening of the first community centre for the women of the coffee plantion village of La Cruz in 2012 was a dream came true.
We were pleased to make a place possible where women can gather for educational courses, frank discussions, health concerns and as an activity area for initiating sustainable projects. The centre is supplied with sewing machines, tables and chairs, a kitchen and a model vegetable garden. In 2013, with the assistance of Rotary and ICO funding, we will be presenting 20 energy efficient stoves to families especially selected by the women's committee. Likewise, we will help build 20 latrines and enable 20 families to have raised gardens. All programs are based on the values and concerns expressed by the women. A strong leadership has emerged as the women develop a strong passion to assist the real needs of their community. There is some seasonal work in the coffee plantation, which enables them to live in one room rented houses. A dental clinic will be offered in 2013, and we are planning a course in bee keeping as a possible source of income. It is exciting to work with these highly motivated appreciative women. Funds are required to pay rent for the building and assist families with the educational costs of their children.
