Bank Street
Our Bank Street building is our co-op's first building. The building has been a 5 unit rental building for many years and like all rental buildings in Victoria, was at risk of being re-developed as a condo building by the mere fact that today's extreme market prices are far too costly for most to continue rental housing after a new purchase. In September 2007, Roofs and Roots purchased the building and secured it with community ownership in perpetuity. Bank Street is now governed and managed by the people who should - the residents!

The building has 3 one bedroom and 2 two bedroom units that are home to single adults and mixed family arrangements. The residents are particularly fond of cats and are excited about the opportunity to make the building their own. The people who live their have already started taking leadership in the yard by starting to turn a mostly abandoned lawn into a garden. Plans to seriously reduce our energy use (the building currently uses oil heat) over the coming years are already underway. We have started to measure our carbon footprint and will continue to do so as we work towards cutting our use of fossil fuels. We will post those changes to our website.
